(SHOULDN'T he know about the eyes? Considering he was supposed to be keeping watch on everyone's investigations...)
"Right. Then do you have anything else you need to say before we move onto Near's report?"

(Oh, well I guess it's up to you then.)
Mello looked thoughtful. "I'll tell you if I think of anything." Was L disappointed? It was so hard to tell...

(okay, whatever, he knows...in which case L and B's first meeting needs to go a different way. Whatever)
L nodded and turned to the white haired teenager. "Near?"

Near sighed twirling a stand of hair. "Well...we figured out there is obviously more than one notebook- " He started. "I also have been keeping in touch with the fake 'L'. He seems quite paranoid all the time....." He paused for a moment. "We also have a gut feeling that Kira, or Light Yagami, has an accomplice, but not Miss Amane. The SPK has already took a team member of the Japanese Task Force, his name was Mogi somthing or other, to tell us some more information on what Light Yagami has been doing there...since he did take your name and all. He told us something about a 'thirteen day rule' for the notebook Kira has been using to kill criminals. You may probably already know that. We tested the 'thirteen day rule' and firgured out it was a fake written in rule. I figured that Kira... or his associate wrote that fake rule down, to confuse people, if they ever found it, or to scare them off, because it states if you don't kill someone in thirteen days with the possesion (sp?) of the notebook, you would die."

L was glad to hear the 13 day rule repudiated with certainty. He'd been so blinded by the existence of shinigami that he took all the 'rules' in the notebook to be absolute truth. So shameful.
Did Light know that they know though?
L shook his head. No, couldn't go back to holding Light captive again, especially since he likely has 'disciples' to do his bidding...
"Thank you for confirming the fake rule but what makes you so sure Light is Kira?" L asked, wanting to hear it from a different angle.

"If Light Yagami was Kira, it makes sense that he wouldn't have killed Sayu Yagami as he did my first hostage..." Mello butted in "Unless you assume Kira to be ruthless enough to kill his own family..."

"Exactly what Mello said."

"Perhaps Kira didn't have access to the girl's name?" L offered as an explanation.

"... So... That would be the task force assuming that Kira killed the director and therefore not advertising the fact that the girl had been kidnapped?"

"Why would they? Especially if someone close was particularly involved."

"Only a small number of officers stormed my headquarters. I believe, only the task force for catching Kira... So I don't think the rest of the police were even notified. Assuming that a member of the taskforce is Kira, he then wouldn't be able to kill Sayu Yagami..... Well, not without the suspicion being directed entirely on that small number of people. And I'm sure he'd realise that Near at least would pick up on that immediately."

L grinned. "Very good deduction."

Mello managed to stop himself beaming triumphantly. He smiled at L.

L wondered if Mello noticed that he'd praised Near in his last statement, and felt a little better that they were somewhat getting along.

"Well, in any case, a few of the taskforce members seem to suspect Yagami... Mainly thanks to Near..." Argh. He hoped Near wasn't getting the impression that Mello wanted to make friends after all this time.
