(...this must be the past...L isn't handcuffed to Light yet...how would L get from Japan to the US so quick?? Ah, whatever)
L had been in __________, investigating the latest lead in the Kira case, when he received the call from Near. Figuring the white haired boy wasn't one to accidentally dial his number and then hang up, L knew something was up.
Luckily he'd installed a chip in the phone he gave Near, so he had simply used his GPS to determine his location.
Now he was standing outside Near's hotel room, with Watari standing by in the next room, just in case.

(It's been a few hours... Oh, and this is set about a week before B's 'death' so L probably hasn't begun to even suspect Light.)
B smoothed down Near's clothes to make them fit him a little better, and slowly opened the door, peering out cautiously.

L's mouth almost dropped. What was Beyond...? His hand automatically went for the panic button on his belt to alert Watari of the situation.

L paused and finally took in the whole picture.
Beyond was standing in front of him with too small clothes and a terrible hack-job hair cut. His face was gaunt and judging from his stance, he likely wasn't hiding any weapons on him. L's eyes narrowed.
"Where's Near?"

"Then why don't we take this out in the hallway?" L suggested, half of him wanting to lead the maniac away from his potential heir and the other half wanting to go into the hotel room to see if Near was still alive.
L didn't like the look in Beyond's eyes, so it was a good thing he'd told Watari to come get him after 20 minutes if he didn't call.
