Bzzt.
Click.
L stared at the monitor as he typed in the access code. It was time to contact his proteges and see what they found during their investigations.
He was 78% certain the numbers he'd stolen from the satellite were accurate.
L dialed Mello's cell.

Mello frowned as his phone bleeped with a number that he didn't know. He flipped it open, folding it to his ear. "Hello?"

L held the voice scrambler to his mouth as he spoke, just in case it wasn't who he expected would pick up -- better safe than sorry was one of his mottos. "Mello."

Mello froze. Had Near given his number to the second L? He wouldn't put it past him. "Who is this?"

"Mello," L repeated. He paused to lick the powdered sugar from and the computer pinged again, displaying one of Near's phone numbers on the screen. Punching in the digits to activate the three-way-calling system, followed by Near's landline number, he waited for the answering click before declaring: "This is L."

Near had picked up the ringing phone in the SPK headquarters. Near didn't say anything.

L was never one for patience, as seen by his direct challenge of one Yagami Light by going undercover at Todai University. Accordingly, he cut to the chase.
"Near, Mello, this is not a prank. Respond, or I will start telling humiliating stories from time long past. For instance, Mello, about your first physical at Home, when I was called in to assist the nurse. Or Near, about the day after a certain someone vandalised one of your puzzles and you tried to exact revenge..." L trailed off.

".....L......?" Near's eyes grew wide. "No....thats impossible.....L died four years ago...then again...how did he know about Mello's and my...past.-" Near thought to himself. He had so many things to ask his father like figure.

Immediately recognizing the soft, boyish voice of his white-haired potential successor, the corners of L's lips raised and he replied, "Still don't believe me? Well then, how about when you, Near, wore Amelie's sundress? When all your clothes were in the wash courtesy of Mello's hidden stash of chocolate and an uncharacteristic heatwave. Further still, there was the time when, Mello, you came to find me after going through with a dare and eating a frog. I really could go on."

Near smiled slighty. "Ah...I see." He replied. He knew this was L the real L. "L....may I ask something?"

"I suppose you may, though I don't promise you'll get an answer," L said, wondering what on earth Mello was doing on the other line. He idly picked some sprinkles off his doughnut and sucked them into his mouth.

"Where, exactly....were you when we thought you were....dead?" Near knew he wouldn't get the answer from L, just yet.

L slightly raised a non-existent eyebrow and wondered when Near had gotten so bold.
"Let's just say I've been observing everything on the sidelines. I've also been keeping tabs on the two of you, which leads me to the reason for this call: I'd like to set up a meeting to discuss and exchange information. Though I've managed to glean some facts from both of your computers," L paused, letting his proteges acknowledge that their top-knotch security had been breeched, "I'd prefer to hear a more detailed analysis of your findings."

Near was still shocked that L was alive. He was so happy...but afraid he had been failing as one of L's succsessor's.
"I see. A meeting sounds.....fine." Near was a bit uneasy talking to L after so long, beacause he knew he was no longer a child.

Mello still wasn't answering. How...strange. But of course not entirely unexpected. Mello had always been the emotional one. Maybe he was shocked into an upset stupor?
...or maybe he was being held captive as someone else was listening in on the line...
Instead of telling them the coordinates of his most recent safehouse, L decided to go with Plan B.
"I will have someone come and pick you both up at noon the day after tomorrow. Mello, make your way to SPK headquarters. It'll be easier that way."
