Wait, this sounds like...
"...and what do you think of Mello?"

"I really want to be his friend...and for him to accept me as a friend...but, he won't ever change. He is too stubborn..." Near replied. He liked the sound of L's heartbeat, it was very calm and soothing.

L pat Near on the head again, letting his fingers twirl a bit through the soft strands of hair.
"I see. You want his friendship but can't have it, hmm." L thought about this for a bit. He, too, would feel agitated if he was denied something he wanted. That would explain the chest pains. But what about the lightheadedness? "Near, has Mello done anything recently that could be categorized as 'traumatic' for you?"

"No, none that I can think of. But, I did see him cry once...I tried asking him about it, but he just hit me." Near said the last part quietly.

L chewed some more on his thumb as he puzzled through this bit of information. As a detective, he saw people cry all the time on interrogation tapes. Witnessing tears isn't a traumatic event. However, the punch may have knocked Near's brain around a bit, causing dizziness...which he could've then associated with Mello. Much like how someone could develop an allergy to a food after getting violently sick from eating it. L explained it as such to his little bed mate.

Near nodded, even though he knew L probably could not see him. "The only person Mello is really nice to is Matt. He doesn't say much, but he is nice to me." Near paused for a moment as thunder clapped. ".....L? Do you think Mello will ever accept me?"

L felt the tiny head nodding against his chest and patted Near's shoulder once more.
"There is a slight chance that, in the future, you two may be forced to get along for the sake of an investigation, during which he will have to accept you in order to function well together. However, for the time being, it seems unlikely that Mello will let go of his grudge against you for surpassing his scores," L said quite frankly. He was never one for tact.

Near frowned slightly. "I will look foward to that investigation then." Near smiled slightly. He started to wonder what his father figure was thinking abut just then. He was always calm around him. Even though he was at an orphanage, he was happy. He always pondered about how he got here, and what his parents looked like. Maybe he would ask. "L...how did I get here? How did I become an orphan?" He asked calmly.

L quickly recalled the night Near was brought to Wammy's. The tiny toddler was covered in scrapes and bruises after having escaped and ran shoeless to the neighbours' home for help. Near was 8 now. When L was 8, he was already reading police reports of gruesome murders all over the world. Near could handle hearing about his past.
"Your father was an abusive alcoholic. One night you went for help, but it was too late for your mother by the time the authorities arrived. We'd been keeping an eye on you because several of our scouts noted you had an exceptional talent for puzzle-solving games, so when this incident happened, we were notified fairly quickly. Roger came to pick you up from the police station and after manipulating the paperwork, brought you here."

"Oh..." Near yawned and fell asleep, while listening to L's heartbeat.

L prodded the snowy top of Near's head. When no response came, he shrugged imperceptively and dozed off to the sound of pattering raindrops against the window.

Near was awakened in cold sweat by a crash of thunder that shook the room, waking him up from his nightmare. It was a dream about his mother and how she died. Near tried not to wake L, he needed his sleep.

L was a light sleeper, so it wasn't surprising that he woke up when his bed mate shifted so violently. Slowly blinking blearily as he looked out the window, he estimated that about 2 hours passed since he'd fallen asleep. It was still storming outside.
Turning so he was now face to face with the startled boy, L threw an arm over Near's little shoulders and pulled him close. "Sleep."

Near started to cry softly, so that L couldn'y hear him, and fell back asleep.

Ignoring the tears that made the front of his shirt uncomfortably damp (consoling crying people was NOT his forte), L also drifted back to sleep.
