Once L returned to the room, he placed Near on the floor again and pulled out some files. He left the boy to his own devices as he read through the details.

"But I am not an orphan. I have a daddy. But he didn't like me much. The last time I saw my mommy she was on the floor with this red stuff on her back. I didn't see her the next day. Daddy told me mommy ran away." He smiled.

He felt a bit bad for quashing all of little Near's hopes for a happy family, but one did not coddle at Wammy's House.
"Your father was a bad man and he killed your mother, so he was put in jail and she's dead."
