It was 9:00am, a three year old Near sat on the ground looking around to see his new home where he would be staying for a while. Since he had been taken out of an obbusive (sp?) home, he had a few cuts and bruises on his legs, arm, and face that hurt every once in a while. For Near this place was just......different. It was his first day at Wammy's.

L usually let Roger deal with settling the new kids in, but today the older man asked him to supervise for a bit, since he still had a bit of paperwork to fill out for their latest addition. He was in between cases anyway, so it couldn't hurt.
L entered the small greeting room and crouched down beside the white haired toddler.
"Hello."

Nears eyes widened. The man in front of him looked........well......strange. Near quietly said. "Hello......." He was a bit scared that he was going to hurt him. He looked up into L's eye's and noticed how gentle they looked. He tilted his head to the side.

...L didn't know the proper protocol for consoling small children, so he simply held out a lollipop. "I'm L. Would you like this?"

Near tilted his head to the other side. He never saw candy before. "What is it?"

L's eyes opened impossibly wider. What a poor, deprived child!
L stood and quickly glanced over Near's medical records. After being assured that the boy wasn't a type I diabetic, L scooped him up and walked briskly towards the kitchen.

Mello sat on the countertop, delightedly eating his way through a bowl of melted chocolate. He'd finally worked out how to power a microwave! Mind you, there was probably more chocolate on himself and the surrounding surfaces than in his bowl.

Near blinked as they went into the kitchen and say Mello. He tried hiding while L was still holding him.

Mello looked incredibly guilty when he saw L, hiding the chocolate bowl behind his back.

Near peeked at Mello then looked away.

L was sure he was supposed to say that having chocolate first thing in the morning was bad for you, but then he'd be a hypocrite. Instead, he asked, "Morning, Mello, care to share?"

Near looked at Mello again. "Who is that girl......?" He asked.

L could see Mello's cheeks reddening in rage, so he quickly answered, "Mello is a boy, not a girl, Near."

"Oh......sorry....Mello. Who is Near?" He asked softly.

L patted the boy on the head. "It's your name now."
